Global Warming: Balancing Perspectives and Facts

Here's a great illustration from InformationIsBeautiful.net on the often stark contrasts between the "industrialist-capitalist" apologetic front and the ongoing scientific research and consensus on the effects of the CO2 on global warming. The concept of "truthful speech" is evidently a virtue long-lost in the antiquity, when we live in a world where warped or false state statements to advance slanted agendas have become the norm of the day. Below is a composite of the diagrams for eye-food. Please see the full documented illustration and related notes on the website.

People keep thinking the world isn't ever going to tip out of balance despite our global efforts to sap her dry and to pump her full of every conceivable kind of harmful substance in liberal excess. Hoping to consume without worry for the future is however a very short-sighted utopia. Our imaginative sugar-coatings of the emerging problems may give us a hollow sense of solace, yet if we fail to address the actual existing problems at the bottom of the buzz, all we will have accomplished is juggling a parade of words while the world grows all the more morbid on the background.

Whenever you take too much and neglect the greater balance, whether in nature or the society, you'll be deprived of the pleasures of your loot at the end of the day. If you don't build with two eyes for sustainability, you're not going enjoy a balanced life-cycle in production — a concept not at all outside the realm of common sense, if you care enough to actually pause and think about it. There are no infinite resources, there is no infinite tolerance — and if you don't know where exactly the line is drawn in water, then by all means err on the side of caution!

= Fact Checking: "The Global Warming Skeptics vs The Scientific Consensus" =

Foresight is everything if you intend to operate on a scale with potential global impact, whether we're talking about governments, corporations, or anyone else in the helm. The evil of confusion is rampant in the absence of foresight for sustenance and balance, and this cardinal vice is at the heart of countless environmental disasters. Greed makes us blind in one eye; greed-driven power blinds them both. And we all know the story of the blind leading the blind into the proverbial dark pit!

= Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1526–1569): The Blind Leading the Blind =

As with the global warming chart here, whenever we form opinions and broadcast thoughts on important topics like these, let's seek to look at all the perspectives — if only to ensure we're actually commenting on the real issues deserving attention, not just the ongoing popular hearsay. Whether it's politics, global warming or ideological conflicts, we need to carefully identify and understand the variables and relations of the whole big picture — and to keep double-checking our perspectives to ensure we're battling beyond the lofty realms of our stimulated imagination!

There's too much broadcasting of strong opinions in proportion to the little homework people do with the information they digest and pass on as facts. A saturation of convoluted opinions and off-balance commentary leads to an overall convolution and degradation of the level of helpful and constructive discussion, leaving the actual pressing issues all but resolved while we bicker on about trivialities. Comparing perspectives and getting to the bottom of claims is not optional at this point, for the amount of warped information flowing across the cyber-highway has grown by leaps and bounds over the last decade.

Let's not contribute to the confusion, let's contribute to the solutions! The actual solutions will only become more evident once we've cleared through the buzz of confusion and arrived at real data and more reliable information to work with. Check your sources and distill information to facts, look for gaps and seek for the full spectrum of insight, double-check your own thoughts and question your trail of reason, keep your approach open and subject to recurring peer review — and contribute your share in a solution of wisdom to heal the growing state of confusion in the interconnected world of information.

As I research online for my blogs I am so saddened by the amount of online opinion that is misinformed and purely biased, sometimes completely disregarding scientific data. I am also distressed by how much support these opinions receive! I don't understand why we must war over this issue like schoolchildren...why don't people realise that the truth is inexorable and will manifest itself no matter how much virtual ink is spilled denying it, the climate is changing, how can people not see this? we must drop our banners and work to accept our situation, taking responsibility and working towards a future that is conscious, accountable and more intelligent than the one we are currently heading for...

Should we then abolish economy and trade systems altogether? Trade systems can be mighty useful in keeping a society running and supplied with its essential needs. It's not in a system of economy per se, as it's not like any of our ancestors never got greedy stocking up squirrel skins. Essentially the problem emerges when we live without two eyes open.

When trade systems becomes the hub of the world, we get one-eyed greed capitalism who end up abusing the nature. When they become the enemy of all good life, we get militant hippies who end up wrecking our societal infrastructures. Clearly neither of these two presents neither a satisfactory consensus nor a win-win scenario.

We need to have both in a healthy balance, where the economy supports the environment and vice versa, and both end up healthy and happy. It of course means re-thinking our culture of consumerism and the "lust of earth" we seem to be driven by, instead of loftier goals in life.

@Paradigms: It seems to be a vicious circle. The conspiracy theorists who keep expanding their boundless grapevines are in effect their own worst enemies, for with the unbelievable saturation of noise they generate, they make it almost impossible for the rest of us to figure out what exactly might actually be going on...

We need many more reliable independent news and data sources, along with open-source initiatives for fact-checking, information archiving and easily accessible online info-services. This is where the future of our information lies, and I have a number of open files and budding related initiatives. If there are people who are technologically or informatively savyy, please link up at LinkedIn or Facebook to bounce thoughts back and forth.

Since we have the religious factor invariably involved in the great equation of things --- matters of faith and religious cosmologies are after all deeply embedded in the hearts of billions people -- here are also some Abrahamic and Dharmic perspectives to encourage the noble cause of balance between all.

The symbol of Ichthys (ΙΧΘΥΣ) has two intersecting symmetric arcs, and together they form the perennial fish of balance. Have two friendly fishes, one for men and the other for women, and the stream flows on. Then let the two fishes eat the five elemental breads in the profound lake of life, and we all have a belly full of sould and body food. Here's a stanza from Isha Upanishad, one of the ten principal classic sources of Vedanta philosophy.

īśāvāsyam idam sarvaḿ yat kiñca jagatyāḿ jagat /
tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā mā gṛdhaḥ kasya svid dhanam // Isa Up. 1

"All of this is covered by the great sharing master, whatever sojourns in the revolving universe. As he has left, so you should partake; do not cover the wealth of anyone else!"

There's an alternative rendering in the Bhagavata-purana (8.1.10), where the first quarter reads: ātmāvāsyam idaḿ viśvam -- "By the self, this entirety is covered." Isopanishad consists of only 18 verses, and as such has been commented on by countless Hindu teachers, both ancient and modern. Please see the Wikipedia link for some two dozen versions of the text, full of ageless wisdom and universal relevance across religious traditions.

It used to be that people would queue up for concerts or sports events. Nowadays people queue up and wait in the same spirit for a new piece of technology they can amuse themselves with. Apple fans queue for new iPhone 4

To me, this comes across as an extremely unhealthy obsession. And to think that we actually take great pride in a culture like this! Whatever happened to the noble ideals of having a bit of balance, and making do with what works for as long as it serves its purpose?

No wonder things are sliding out of balance, when the masses care less and less in their infatuation for the next dingling sensation on their magic screens and their magic buttons --- now with a new sort of glass that also breaks if you drop it... and then go buy some more.
